Bald Eagle Appreciation Day

Among the many unusual holidays out there, a not-so-weird one is Bald Eagle Appreciation Day. Today happens to be one of several days recognized with this "holiday". Ironically, just this past week, I was able to capture my first photo of a bald eagle in the wild (as opposed to a captured one at a zoo!).

During the winter months, bald eagles can frequently be seen flying and standing on the ice of the Mississippi River along Missouri, Illinois, Iowa and states further north. Nearly every time we cross the Mississippi from Missouri into Illinois, we see several eagles standing on the ice. It's not uncommon for us to see up to six or more at a time.
